Like all things in life, routines have their purpose and place, but breaking them now and again is a healthy habit. If you engage in regular routines for your body, mind, and spirit, even those, although good for you, need a little shaking up. There are several benefits of switching up your routines that will improve your outlook and your life in general.

For one, when you are in a routine, it is easy to become robotic, simply do and don’t think, you become less present. Changing your routine can helps revitalize your life because you have to pay attention. You stimulate your mind when you have to really think about what it is you are doing, what is different, how does it effect you? You will need to reuse on assessment skills. In other words your brain has to be more alert, you become less rote and more filled with purpose and anticipation.

Shirking routines eases boredom, let’s face it, routines can easily cause a case of the doldrums. Doing something different, like taking a new route to work, helps you to see things in a different way. Perhaps you have been missing out on a particular part of town that is beautiful or maybe you discover that you can actually walk to work, if you change up your day to day routine.

Breaking a routine now and again, helps you appreciate it when you get back to it. For example, when you travel, you are forced to alter your day to day habits. You may not have access to certain foods or drinks or exercise clubs, so instead you sample new beverages, unique local foods, and take walks. When you get back home, all of your routines will be waiting for you. You may have found a new verve for them or perhaps you discovered a routine that fits you better, is healthier or less pressure oriented.

Abandoning routines is liberating, it gives you permission to say yes to making changes in your life. It allows you to alter your mental thought processes to change the channel and think differently. We all fall into patterns of thinking, some good, some not so good. When you break routines it helps you see that you are able to develop to revolutionize they way you live and think. It helps you to realize you are not forever condemned to being shy or sad or frightened.

When you break routines you empower yourself because there is movement, no more stagnation, no more marching in a line simply because that is what you have always done.

Patterns are hard to break, but turning a routine on its head will help you do just that. Patterns and routines often deplete you of creative thinking. Side stepping them, can re-ignite your creative energies and lead you to new frontiers and conclusions you may never have reached if you followed the routine path. Creativity thrives on diversity of thought and of experiences. For example, the more you travel the more you develop an understanding of other cultures, and the less intolerant you will be of others who are different than you.

Lastly, letting go of routines allows your mind to roam the cavernous world of options. You open up to potentiality, to new and exciting opportunities that when you break a routine you discover.

Go ahead and release some of those stagnant routines and see what new experiences are laying there waiting for you!
